How/Why did you get started in fitness?

I have always been pretty athletic and was always very involved in high school
sports. After high school, things slowed down and I got pretty out of shape. I
did not lead a very healthy lifestyle. I did not eat right. I decided to make some changes so I got a gym membership. I quickly fell in love with working out. After a few months in the gym, I decided to start training for a competition. My first competition was in November of 2010, where I took 3rd place, and I was instantly hooked to the competition life. There is such a huge feeling of accomplishment stepping on that stage every time. I transitioned from the bikini division to figure on earned my IFBB pro status at the 2014 NPC USA's. I have also turned my passion for fitness and helping others into a career. As a trainer and coach, I love watching my clients transform, just like I did.

What motivates you?

I'm motivated to live healthy because of the way it makes me feel physically and mentally. I didn't always live healthy. I'm now more energetic, happier, and motivated than ever. I love having a positive impact and inspiring others to live a healthy lifestyle.

What does your training look like?

I lift heavy six days per week. I train shoulders and back twice per week and glutes/legs three times per week. In the offseason, I do 3-4 HIIT cardio sessions per week that involve sprints or plyometrics. I increase the cardio as I get closer to a competition.

Favorite exercises and why?

Squat, deadlift, and clean and press. 3 great compound exercises that use multiple muscle groups.

Favorite muscles to train?

Legs and shoulders.

How/Why did you get started in fitness?

At the age of 16, I underwent arthroscopic hip surgery after a lifestyle of sports and horseback riding. My labrum was torn in half, leaving bone-on-bone grinding every step I took. In surgery they shaved the jagged worn bones down, mended my labrum back together, and placed it back onto my joint with anchors and screws. Recovery was a year and a half long full of struggles, but I was determined to beat the odds and come back stronger than before!

What motivates you?

Once I was cleared to begin physical activity again, I was determined to take my body to a new limit. Before I began to hit the weights, I was a tiny 105lbs without a trace of muscle. Fast forward 2 years later and I have built a physique that inspires women every day, showing them that anything can be achieved with determination. I enjoy feeling confident, strong & successful and showing others that they can too!

How do you like to train?

Not only do I train, but I like to train to win! Why? Many people want to be competitors, but few will be champions. Each day that I step into a gym I want to be better than the time before.

Schedule of training in a week?

3 days of lifting & 3 days of HIIT cardio/plyometrics

Favorite exercises and why?

My top 3 favorite exercises are geared towards my legs. I like to use compound lifts to hit multiple muscles, and leg extensions to give an added focus to my quads.
1.) Leg press
2.) Leg extensions
3.) Hack Squats

Favorite muscles to train?

After my hip surgery I suffered from severe muscle atrophy. Often times I felt discouraged or afraid to push myself, but I learned to love "leg day". Most people who say I inspire them say that the progress I have made on my legs is what's most inspiring -anything legs & glutes I am all about!

Do you take any supplements and what would you recommend?

I only use PEScience brand supplements. Depending on my goals, my supplement stack varies. Everyday I have 1-2 scoops of Select Protein. When I am cutting, I add in 1-2 capsules of Norcodrene in the morning, followed by 1-2 scoops of Alphamine (5-6hrs after Norcodrene) before my workout. When I am focused on lean massing I take 4 capsules of AnaBeta Elite a day.

Cheat meals if any?

Typically on Friday nights I will substitute my last meal for a snack that I've been craving. I absolutely love anything sweet: candy, cookies, or even ice cream.

Who do you look up to and why?

I admire almost everyone who lives a similar lifestyle. I know it's not easy, and it takes a lot of dedication, sacrifice and hard work. So anyone who gives it their all, has my respect.

Favorite quote?

"Champions aren't just made in the gym, they are made from something they have deep inside them: A desire | A Dream | A vision."

What's in the future for you?

I have always wanted to compete as a bikini competitor. However, I am in no rush to get on stage. I truly enjoy sculpting my physique and making progress one step at a time. When I feel that I have reached a point where I am 100% happy with my conditioning, you'll be sure to see me up on stage!

How/Why did you get started in fitness?

I got into fitness at a young age playing sports, I always found competition to be fun, exciting and motivating. From there I of course eventually found myself in the weight room, striving to get stronger and faster. I enjoyed working out and exercise a lot and stuck with it even since. In 2012 I decided I wanted to compete and that’s when I did my first NPC Men’s Physique competition, placing 2nd. That was the first time I really dieted and trainer. Now staying in shape and be confident with the way I look is just a part of my every day life, exercising is something I look forward to every day and am always looking to share my passion with others.

What motivates you?

Being a self motivated person I would say what motivates me the most is just seeing how I am able to control how my body looks and feels. I know what to do in order to gain muscle, or lose fat, or increase endurance. Being confident in the way you look is a great feeling. Being able to help others and see others make progress is also very motivating and rewarding.

Joseph Ortiz

Age: 23  •  Height: 6’3  •  Weight On/Off Season: 210/235

How/Why did you get started in fitness?

I was the typical overweight sibling in my family, normally pick on and made fun of. When I got to high school, I joined the basketball team and lost a lot of weight and got a few weight lifting beginner tips from my older brother who works out. From there I began to see results and fell in love with the process. I started doing my own research and found the types of workouts that I liked and were fun. From there I began to grow both physically and mentally and realized the more I learn, the more I can continually improve.

What motivates you?

Knowing how far I've come, and I never want to go back to the unhealthy life I was living before. Knowing that fitness is a never ending journey and everyday is another opportunity to improve myself. The human body has NO LIMITS.

How do you like to train?

I train all aspects of fitness: traditional weight lifting, power lifting, body building, calisthenics, HIIT.

Schedule of training in a week?

Back, chest, rest or touch up, legs, shoulders, arms, rest or touch up.

Favorite exercises and why?

Chest fly always gives me a great chest pump, typically light weight with high rep range. Bent other barbell rows, one thing I learned: "if you wanna grow, you gotta row". and squats, full body activation and it never hurts to have huge legs.

Favorite muscles to train?

My back is my favorite muscle. Seeing my back improvement thru the years has been very satisfying. Also a strong back supports everything you do in life

Do you take any supplements and what would you recommend?

I take my own Mynt Supplements. In my opinion, the BEST and CLEANEST supplements available. The entire product line was designed by Mark Macdonald who is the #1 nutritionist in North America and Jeff Later who was Mr.California in 2013 for body building. These products are designed to take your body to the next level, safely. The purpose of supplements is to improve your body, so if your taking something that can damage you in a few year, your contradicting what your goal is. Available at Fluential.GoMynt.com

Cheat meals if any?

Pizza! To be more specific, Gina's Pizza in Laguna beach! Hands down the best pizza I've ever had.

Who do you look up to and why?

The average guy in the gym busting his ass to be great! Reminds me why I started.

Favorite quote?

"With discipline, belief, and the right knowledge, we become the best we can be"-unknown.

What's in the future for you?

I'm currently a personal trainer; I soon want to be a gym owner for a private training facility for high level athletes and the average joe looking to improve their quality of life.
